What’s with the killing on Rhythm City? Many characters have been killed on Rhythm City since its inception in 2007. I don’t know whether this is their way of creating drama but it gets too much when they are killing characters when they don’t have a storyline for them or merely trying to have drama in the soapie.
I feel like some of the characters shouldn’t have been killed and just let them disappear like they initially did with Thembi but later killed her. There are characters that I feel like it would be nice to have them back on the soapie. Even though some of them were not really part of the big cast but they made Rhythm City captivating.
In their first few months after the soapie started they killed a character by the name of Mandla (played by then kwaito artist Bravo) who was a thug and Tsidi’s boyfriend. Tsidi was in love with this bad-boy and her family didn’t approve. Mandla was also friends with Suffocate and Fats. He died when they went to do a house-breaking.
There was also Sam (Wandile Molebatsi ) who was a gospel singer signed under Redemption records. He also died. He was Lucilla’s toyboy. Lucilla was seducing him to sign under Redemption records when he was signed to another label before he signing with Redemptions Records.
The boy wouldn’t let go of Lucilla even after Lucilla accomplished her mission. I think he died because he was sick. I don’t think they should have killed this character. But they always say they didn’t see the character developing.
After sometime Rachel Phakathi (Lucia Mthiyane ) also died, some people thought it was a good thing because her character was boring. I also felt that way.
As time went on her character didn’t have a strong story line even though at the beginning she seemed like the centre of the soapie. I think somewhere somehow the writers lost it and couldn’t develop anymore interesting storyline for Rachel.
What’s worst about all this killing, they kill these characters so early when you are starting to enjoy their storylines and wanting to see more of them. Like Nonti (Refiloe Seseane) who was challenging David in his evil ways.
I think she was a good character in taking on David. She was this fierce woman, who was not shaken by David but they decided to end that character on Rhythm City. She reminded me of Julia played by Xolile Tshabala on Generations.
Now David doesn’t have a strong rival to take him on. Don’t tell me about Miles and Irvin *rolls eyes*. I think if they have just let her disappear it would be nice to see her back now. I mean there is something missing on Rhythm City maybe characters like Nonti would bring back those captivating moments.
They also killed Diphuka (Tshepiso Mashego ) who had such an intriguing storyline with David. She had a fling with David who was dating her aunt, Lucilla. They were doing this all under her nose. Diphuka was then killed by David when he had fear that Diphuka might spill the beans to Lucilla about their secret affair.
Not so long ago there was a character by the name of Bhoboza (Siyabonga Radebe) signed under Sbu’s recording label Hustle. He also died after jumping off the balcony. He had some phobia of not being alone.
Thembi (Mmabatho Montsho), Rachel’s daughter and Sbu’s girlfriend came back from KZN to die in Johannesburg after she discovered that she had cancer. I think they only brought back this character to die so they can know Thembi doesn’t exits.
Now they are killing Puleng's baby Matric bathong! Hayi ne mara Rhythm City. But why they kill Matric?
Good thing that they didn’t kill Naomi. I was actually surprised that they didn’t kill her because they like creating interesting characters then kill them later on. My prediction was that she is going to die too after her craziness.
I’m sure there are some killed characters that I forgot here.
So what do you think about this killing of characters? Which character do you think shouldn’t have been killed on RC? Which one would you love to see back?
