On Wednesday I went to watch a movie called The Green Hornet. It’s an action packed movie. It is about this young man, Britt Reid played by Seth Rogen and his father James Reid played by Tom Wilkinson.
James Ried owns the biggest newspaper in LA. Britt has been living with his father since his mother died when he was still young. He's always been a reckless child and his father is a strict man.
Britt has never worked in his life. He is just a party animal who likes girls, while his father runs his newspaper. Britt is a spoilt brat so being the spoilt brat that he is, his father let's him sleep in the garage.
They live in LA - a neighbourhood filled with gangsters who do crime and Britt's father sometimes publishes stories about the crime in the neighbourhood in the hope that these criminals will finally get caught and be arrested by police so that LA be a crime free city.
But later Britt's father dies - Britt inherits his father's newspaper and becomes a rich man. Britt doesn’t know where to begin running a newspaper but he asks one of his father's employees to handle everything.
Britt gets introduced to one of his father's remarkable employees: Kato, played by Jay Chou. Kato made tea for Britt's father and took care of his cars.
Kato is Chinese and he's a genius - he can make cars and pimp the ride. He pimped one of Britt father's cars so that it cannot be shot at. It can create fire and has wheel caps that can turn into sharp weapons. The name of this car is The Black Beauty.
Britt and Kato decide to make this incognito, which they name The Green Hornet and they use The Black Beauty to accomplish their mission. They want to be Hero’s but they decide to do it by being villains.
With indirect help from Britt’s secretary, Lenore Case (played by Cameron Diaz) they are set to go the right way in accomplishing their mission.
The Green Hornet wants to take over LA and be the most feared person in LA by gangsters. But there's a already a King of Gangsters in LA, who is the evil and short tempered Benjamin Chudnofsky played by Christoph Waltz.
The Green Hornet will have to come to face with Chudnofsky before he becomes a hero. Chudnofsky doesn't like that there's someone who wants to outshine him and be the most feared person in LA.
Britt always wants everything that The Green Hornet does to be on the front page of his newspaper all the time. The team of journalists do not like this but Britt insists they do it or else. Chudnofsky gets more and more furious when he sees that The Green Hornet is making headlines.
I must say that I enjoyed the movie, even though I don’t like action movies. It keeps you captivated. I think both adults and children will enjoy it. You can watch it with your son or younger brother - they are the most likely to enjoy it as young boys like action movies with karate and such cars that I described above.
There are scenes that adults will enjoy, even though there are those not-so-really scenes of fighting, people flying and all. There is some comedy too - I found myself laughing. The last fighting scene with Britt, Kato and Chudnofsky made me cover my eyes.
I liked Cameron Diaz's performance - she is really the best. She has a small role but she made the most of it. As you watch you don’t forget her character. I would say that the movie is 40% for adults and 60% for children - unless you like action movies then it is 100% for you lol.
"The film is the modern adaptation of The Green Hornet series, which boasts a fascinating history as a radio series, TV series & films (starring Bruce Lee as Kato) from 1966 to today."
It will be released in South Africa cinemas on Friday, 4 February 2011.
