Moments before the gore starts.
I recently suffered through the first episode of The Knick (on M-Net) and I'm done with it. It's
over. It made me feel so unbelievably sick and green I still have the images burnt into my brain days after watching. It's too terrible - all that gore in the operations for what??!
I understand medicine was a mess a hundred years ago and that the show's trying to make it as "realistic" as possible but it's completely overdone and
gratuitous. Both operations took things over edge into Sick - the
Caesarean section and the guy with post-surgery infection - I can honestly say it's the goriest thing I've ever seen on TV!!
The worst is it's so unecessary and could have been done very differently - something that Vikings is very aware of. In case you don't watch it ... Ragnar Lothbrok (the lead character) ripped a guys lungs out of his back (don't try to picture it) and the way the show captured it made it watchable. It was nuts - I never thought I'd be able to handle and yet I did - it's a
very different story with The Knick.
I'm annoyed by Clive Owen as a result. Not so popular in the movies then Clive?? You know ... it's bizarre ... I didn't actually recognize it was him until halfway through the episode. I knew he was in the show before I started watching but then I forgot and was taken aback when I realised it was him, ha!
Ultimately what happened with the show is that all the gore made me so sick and iffy I'm irritated with everyone involved. Even the network ... it's made by
Cinemax who also make Banshee. The channel's got a masculine slant to it so I'm convinced they've made the series for men.
And anyone planning on being doctor maybe. If you can live through watching the operations on the show you can probably live through any real life operation.
If this is you and The Knick doesn't make you sick, don't forget that it's
gone on hiatus and will be back from 6 September.
