Press Release
With the Results show incorporated into the Spectacular this year for the first time in Idols SA history, the Season 10 Top 9 contestants performed live on the State Theatre stage on Sunday night (28 September) just minutes after bidding farewell to their fellow competitors who had received the fewest votes this week, Cape Town’s Vincent Verhoog (25) and Ivan Roux (24) from Centurion.
The musical theme for this week’s performances was “How It Should Have Been Done”, with the contestants demonstrating how some of this season’s most memorable Golden Mic audition numbers
should have been performed.
But first Season 7 runner-up Mark Haze returned to the Idols stage, where it all began for him, with his latest hit, “Lonely”, and this week’s musical mentor, AKA, performed his latest megahit, “Run Jozi”, featuring K.O.
eMalahleni’s
Musa Mashiane (27) was the first of the Top 9 to perform and he chose Mattafix’s “Big City Life”, which was Luchan Carolus audition song in Cape Town. Gareth Cliff thought it was very good. “You sound a bit like Stevie Wonder to me,” he commented.
Unathi Msengana liked how different it was to the previous week’s performance. “Keep it up – keep us guessing, keep the other contestants nervous!” she advised Musa.
And Randall Abrahams was impressed that Musa accompanied himself on the ukelele. “I think the song suited you very well,” he said. “At first I thought you were a bit of a one-trick pony, but after last week’s performance I’m certainly not going to say that.”

Kyle Deutschmann (27), the chiropractor from Durban, performed Rihanna’s “Diamonds” in a way that has nothing to do with Nkosinphile Mbambo’s now-famous braai-inspired version at the Durban auditions.
Gareth thought it sounded a lot like the version by the song’s composer, Sia. “So maybe that was her original vision,” he thought.
“I enjoyed your vocal delivery and I liked the different take that Gareth was talking about,” said Unathi. But she thought it lacked the emotional connection that Rihanna had in her hit version of the song.
“I’ve said ‘cabaret’ before and I’m going to say it again,” Randall commented. He also bemoaned the lack of emotional connection in Kyle’s performance.

Durbanville singer
Demi Lee (24) did the Beyoncé ballad “Halo” somewhat differently to how Raheela Abdool did it at the Durban auditions. Gareth said he was happy that Demi was still here, and she just proved why she should still be around.
Unathi thought it was the perfect song choice for Demi – “so confident, and different to how Bey does it,” she thought.
“It’s good to have you back with us! This is almost like your first comeback show,” said Randall. He said some performances are so good that they can keep earning votes for a contestant for a couple of weeks, and this might be one of those performances.

Lize Mynhardt (21) from Stellenbosch tried to rescue the Queen classic “Bohemian Rhapsody” from Gabsile Mahlangu’s interpretation at the Pretoria audition.
“That’s a curious choice of song,” Gareth noted. He pointed out that Freddie Mercury always really committed to that song and took it over the top, and that Liza didn’t. But Unathi disagreed. “That was incredible to me,” she marveled.
“There are certain songs you just want to stay form as far away as humanly possible and over the past two weeks you chose two of them,” Randall complained.

Vincent Bones (29) from Pietermaritzburg prepared R. Kelly’s “When a Woman Loves”, which was Siyanda Maphumulo’s audition song in Durban. “Now we really have a competition!” Gareth raved. “This was your finest moment in the competition,” he told Vincent.
“Absolutely incredible,” said Unathi, but she advised Vincent to allow himself to show his emotions in his performances. “Votes for dayzz!” Randall smiled.

This week’s Birthday Girl, Nelspruit’s
Bongi Silinda (24), performed the Rihanna classic “Umbrella”, which was the audition song of Idols contestant Valdinah Mutakusi at the Pretoria audition.
“Good song choice,” Gareth noted. But he didn’t think it was one of Bongi’s strongest performances. “You have to fight a little harder than that,” he told her.
“High 5 from me!” said Unathi. She didn’t think it was necessary a bad thing that Bongi made it look so easy. “I just think it lacked an identity, it lacked an edge ... something that made it really special,” Randall commented.

Adele’s “Someone Like You” was a popular audition song this year, and Cape Town music student
Roxy McVean (19) showed how Collen Podile should have done it at the Cape Town auditions.
“Oh, wow,” said Gareth. Even though this was a safe choice for Roxy he found the performance “completely compelling”. “It was powerful and emotive,” Unathi though.
“So far we’ve had Roxy doing Adele, we’ve had Roxy doing Amy Winehouse – I’m still waiting for Roxy ...” Randall noted.

Tumi Morobane (21) employed the skills she learned in her Musical Theatre studies to do a better performance of Whitney Houston’s “Run To Me” than Godfrey Saul’s version at the Cape Town audition.
“There were parts of what you did that definitely made the grade, but you can’t out-Whitney Whitney,” Gareth advised.
But Unathi didn’t agree that Tumi tried to “Whitney”. Randall thought it was possibly her best performance so far. “Tonight all the doubters are silenced,” he declared.

And Cape Town performer
London Louw (24) showed Jozi contestant Tyson Baloyi how Madonna’s “Like A Virgin” should have been done. “You caught me off guard,” Gareth admitted. “I didn’t know that song could be so soulful.” “That was magnificent,” Unathi said simply.
And Randall thought London did a really good job working with the other musicians to give a real performance.

At the end of the evening Gareth said his choice for the performance of the night was split between Vincent and Demi. “London, London, London!” Unathi said simply. And for Randall it was Tumi’s performance of “Run To You”
Voting for the Top 9 performances opened at the start of tonight’s show and closes at 22:00 on Tuesday, 30 September.
The results will be announced in next Sunday’s Spectacular [5 October], when one of the Top 9 contestants will be sent home.
