Press Release
Tumi Morobane hugs her goodbyes.
It was a stripped-down Idols 10 show live from the State Theatre in Pretoria On Sunday, but it wasn’t the contestants that stripped down ... With the help of this week’s musical mentor Kahn Moorbee from The Parlotones the Top 8 this week worked on stripping the songs that they had chosen down to the bare essentials.
The Top 8 group demonstrated the musical theme of the week with a group performance of Imagine Dragon’s “On Top of the World”, and then Idols host ProVerb welcomed someone back onto the Idols stage who really has been on top of the world ever since he won Idols Season 8 in 2012, Khaya Mthetwa.
After a sad farewell to Top 8 contestant Tumi Morobane, The Parlotones performed their latest hit “Slow Assassination” from their “Stand Like Giants”.
And then
Vincent Bones (29) the worship leader from Pietermaritzburg, kicked this week’s competition off with his stripped-down version of James Arthur’s “Impossible”.
“That was astounding!” said Gareth Cliff. “That was one of the most powerful performances I’ve ever seen in Idols.” Unathi Msengana said never thought she’d see a better performance from Vincent than his “Adorn”, but “this is your best performance,” she said.
But Randall Abrahams had doubts. “This aggressive emotional style that you bring to every performance, I just wonder how you’re going to sustain that through an entire album,” he worried.

Nelspruit’s
Bongi Silinda (24) breathed new life into Reverend Al Green’s classic, soulful, “Let’s Stay Together”.
“It was sort of muddy – I love it!” Gareth raved. “All I wanted to do was press ‘repeat’!” Unathi praised, but Randall commented that although Bongi is a very good technical singer, she might be too young to appreciate how transcendent that song is supposed to be. “I missed the soul,” he complained.

Kyle Deutschmann (27), the chiropractor from Durban, stripped down a Drake hit: “Hold On We’re Going Home”.
“I thought you did a very soulful performance, but I like that song ‘blacker’, Gareth said, to Unathi’s vast amusement. “As a black woman, you sang to my heart, my soul, my everything,” Unathi laughed.
“I think you did really, really well – so far in the competition probably your best performance,” Randall said.

Next Durbanville singer
Demi Lee (24) tackled Christina Perry’s “Human”.
Gareth thought this performance was a bit more grounded than some of Demi’s recent performances, but he noted that you can’t smile your way through a song about being vulnerable ... “Remember what you’re singing about, and show us,” he advised.
“That was such an evenly considered song,” Unathi said. And Randall thought this performance was testimony to the power of a really good song to elevate the performer. He said Demi would survive this week thanks to a really good song.

Professional performer
London Louw (24) from Cape Town chose Rixton’s “Me and My Broken Heart”.
“I’m very glad that you’re still here,” said Gareth. “You really do surprise us every week.”
“You’re a breath of fresh air, London,” said Unathi “I think you’ve found the best possible spot tonight by singing a modern pop song, and singing it really well,” Randall complimented him.

eMalahleni’s
Musa Mashiane (27) again chose a hit from Mother Africa: Capetonian Matthew Mole’s “Take Yours, I’ll Take Mine”.
“It’s a great song,” said Gareth. “It’s new, it’s relevant, and you injected just the right about of Musa into it to make it authentic. Dude, you can do no wrong!”
Unathi said Musa’s song choices are astounding because it shows his range and versatility, and Randall said Musa manages to keep the integrity of a song and still bring a winning formula to it. “If you keep on doing that I’m going to see you in the Top 2,” he said.

Lize Mynhardt (21) from Stellenbosch attempted a stripped-down version of the sultry Beyoncé hit with Jay-Z, “Crazy In Love”.
“This was like a tiger in stealth mode,” said Gareth. “It was very, very well done, Lize. My performance of the night,” he said. Unathi said Lize interpreted that song “so maturely”, and that she looked “hot as hell”.
“That was like Black Keys does Beyoncé, with Eartha Kitt on vocals,” Randall raved, and then he serenaded Lize with a few lines of Springsteen’s “Fire”, like he did at Sun City.
All three judges agreed that this was the performance of the night.
