The 21st annual bling SA Music Awards (SAMA XXi) event happened last night, the long sexy legs that accompanied the award to the winners were not noticed, HHP who referred to himself as HH7 hosted the show nicely, the black and white outfits worn by the performers added a nice contrast to the blingy stage and the hip-hop "beef" was finally settled nicely.
Things I liked and enjoyed...
I loved HHP as the host - his intro totally got me hooked as he made jokes about his "dismal" performances before as MC and actor in his younger days. I loved the "Macbeth first witch" and "HH7" stories, the hymn "ha o le mathateng, o mo romele please call me".
I really enjoyed his impromptu performance with Sunnyboy. His tale about his grandfather and the Kwame Nkrumah quotes when addressing the xenophobic/afrophobic attacks. His outfit changes were odd and weird at times; the rap star "biggie smallz" outfit suited him.
Cassper Nyovest had the most memorable performance in that striking all white outfit. He really didn't disappoint and gave a performance worthy of a standing ovation. His choreography was well-delivered and amazing. He reminded all the nay sayers why his fans call him "the best the best the best the besssssst"
Mdu doesn't age, he still looks as yummy as he did when I was a teenager dancing to "Tsiki-tsiki" and his performance should have been scheduled somewhere before or after his Lifetime Achievement Award.
His son, Kgosi, acted more like the winner than his father when accepting the Lifetime Award. That boy had been given an overdose of sugar or was very happy he was up long after bedtime so I missed everything his father said because I was so focused on his celebrations with "his fans".
AKA kept the audience entertained with his leather jacket that had flashing lights as he walked around the room during one of the ad breaks. When he accepted his award, the lights were on. Tis a pity that TV couldn't "show" it right.
The Rebecca Malope Award went to S'fiso Ncwane and his entourage (his ENTIRE family). It was just odd to hear him thank and call his wife "Kim Kardashian" considering...
Pearl Thusi's tennis balls - those nice twins on her chest. They sat just right like implants. I wouldn't mind squeezing them. I am filled with envy at how beautiful and perfectly shaped those twins are.
AKA, K.O. and Cassper Nyovest each walked away with at least one award.
Things that puzzled me...
AKA's performance at the beginning of the "official show" was ironic, "Congratulate Me" was performed at the beginning of the show and then there was no ending performance.
HH7's shades in his first outfit gave me recollections of Babsi Mlangeni in the 80s.
I am all for the afro but Simphiwe Dana's hair made her look like a darker Diana Ross; her tiny face got swallowed by the hair. The outfit also was a lot to take in, not helping much, so there was strong competition between the hair and the black dress with a long white train.
The harp player was completely "invisible" during the Loyiso Bala and S'fiso Ncwane gospel medley. somehow misplaced and just lost on stage.
AKing was a bit high or tipsy neh? Or was it my imagination? His acceptance speech was a bit hectic for me.
Zuluboy's award announcement for the South African SAMA winner.
I always expected more people when Beatenberg went to receive their awards, even when they performed. I kept thinking where is the rest of the group? Is it only me? why though? Where do I find the lyrics to the song Rafael?
Was it all I expected?
Overall, the event was the same like every year, nothing exceptional or extraordinary. I may be the problem for attending too many of these shindigs but I wasn't particularly wowed. Hopefully next year, they have a different venue, something a little bit more and exciting. What do you think could be improved? What would you like to see at the SAMA's? What did you like and would like changed?
