e.tv's putting a Mzansian spin on karaoke in a new gameshow called Shikisha. It premieres on e.tv and OpenView HD on Monday, 7 September at 18h00 and stars members of the public. Singing karaoke.
*Flashback to the last karaoke bar I was at.*
So the contestants have to sing and they also have to multi-task at the same time by playing various nostalgic childhood games. Games they have to play while they sing include bhati, mgusha, skipping and skotch - so the show's similar to Steve-O's Killer Karaoke but with South African flava.
And the contestants can sing. Apparently. According to e.tv, the show searched for people who can sing so that they can showcase their talents too - which doesn't set my mind at ease because we aaaaaaaaaaall know how that works out for Idols and they don't even have to do other stuff at the same time.
Still, you never know. I've heard there are some fine karaoke singers out there and the fact that I've never heard them doesn't mean that they don't exist.
This is how the format works:
In each episode, four contestants will be given an opportunity to showcase their singing abilities while performing an indigenous game. The games, which are introduced as a curve ball to assess the contestants’ multi-tasking skills, will be allocated into each of the three rounds of the show.
The contestants must go through at least 6 challenges without interrupting their singing. They will gain points during each challenge or game. After each episode, the ultimate winner will walk away with a R3 000.00 cash prize.
Gumba Gumba presenter and singer Ntombi Mzolo will be hosting with long-time Craz-e presenter Morena Sefatsa.
