Obviously it was going to happen but it's the sort of thing one wants in writing: HBO has renewed Game of Thrones for Season 7 for 2017.
The news comes days ahead of its
Season 6 premiere on Monday (25 April) but doesn't bring any guarantees about what's happening with the show in the future.
There's been chatter this past week that the show is heading towards its end with two short seasons remaining.
Series showrunner David Benioff had this to say in an interview with
Variety: "I think we're down to our final 13 episodes after this season. We're heading into the final lap. That's the guess, though nothing is yet set in stone, but that's what we're looking at."
Sources later told Variety that 13 could be too few but that upcoming seasons may be fewer than the 10 per season we've seen so far.
