SABC COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng threw shade at rapper AKA on Morning Live this morning when viewers revealed that they were much more interested in AKA than what the SABC had to say.
As we reported
here, Hlaudi and SABC CFO James Aguma were interviewed by Leanne Manas about the four new channels that the SABC plans to introduce. Leanne encouraged viewers to interact with the interview by giving their views or asking questions but no-one asked a thing because they were much more interested in talking about AKA and his appearance on Morning Live.
Leanne dealt with the awks situation by saying: "It seems people are too excited that AKA's coming to visit us. I don't know guys, I don't know if you can compare to AKA at this point. It looks like that's all they want to talk about."
She then managed the situation by bringing the conversation back to the SABCs plans for local content, saying: "
That's local content."
To which Hlaudi replied: "They know the singer because of the SABC. Without SABC there is no AKA so I think it is important to highlight that."
Shadey!
And highly debatable. Yes, the SABC owns national radio stations which have given AKA airplay BUT there is no doubt that he would still be AKA without the SABC. He has YouTube, iTunes, Twitter, DStv and other radio stations (on-air and online, with international reach) so he definitely
is AKA without the SABC.
It raises an interesting question: how much of an impact has the SABC had on AKA's career? Would he be as successful without them? Sound off below.
