And the memorable performances of this week were:
Francis #TeamKahn
Zoë #TeamLira
Almur #TeamKaren
Thembeka #TeamKaren
And that's it. Overall this week's show was disappointing because it was too tame and nice. Yes it ended with Zoë's wildness but other than that it was very samey and too few of them took things to the next level.
The thing struck me most is that many of the contestants seem to have lost their independence - the strong sense of individuality that they had at the start and through the Battle Rounds. Everyone was raw and rough when things started and it's like they've become too polished and need more edge and spontaneity.
The show is about their voices and who they are and it feels as if a lot of this is getting lost by being drowned out by the costumes, the show, the production and everything that surrounds it. It's as if they need to get back to basics - the independence and desires that drove them to audition for the show in the first place. The voice that drove them to pursue music no matter how difficult it got.
This is why Francis and Almur performed so well because they expressed how much they wanted to be saved. They were both up for eviction last week and they took the experience of being saved and channelled it into their voices.
I was pleased when Kahn saved Francis instead of Richard, Prime Zulu or Clemour because each of them need to go deeper and give us more - Richard and Prime especially. We know who they are now and we need more, we need an added dimension and hopefully the threat of leaving will deliver it.
Throughout the show I kept feeling, I need more, more,
MORE - like a massive roar!! There are too many barriers and there's not enough breaking through to the other side. This is holding them back from delivering the unforgettable performances they need to win the show and be The Voice.
