There are too few TV talk shows that get us debating the Big Stuff so we're pleased to see The Big Debate back on our boxes because it always does what it intends to do by stirrrrrring things up.
Previous seasons have had such an impact that the
show was banned from SABC2 by Hlaudi "The Banner" Motsoeneng, just before the Season 5 premiere two years ago.
eNCA and e.tv rescued it for Seasons 5 and 6 and the new Season 7 premiered on e.tv this past Sunday (17 July) at 10h00.
Here's a teaser of what's coming up on this Sunday (24 July):
This week The Big Debate looks at racism, 'whiteness' and highlights the current tensions between between racial groups in South Africa - particularly amongst young people. Racist outbursts like "black people are monkeys who litter our beaches" and "rape of babies is part of black culture” have turned the spotlight back on how South Africans perceive each other, more than 20 years into democracy.
Are these the ravings of crazy individuals, or is there something deeper going on, that needs to be addressed in a public forum, to help South Africa heal? The Big Debate team tackle these tensions and discuss how the structures which are seemingly stoking them, can be dismantled.
