New soapie Reach for the Stars premieres on Zee World this evening (3 February) at 18h00, in place of
Antara which ended on the channel yesterday.
Zee World series often explore topics that don't get screentime elsewhere and Reach for the Stars tells a story that we haven't seen on TV despite the fact that it's so relevant to real life, particularly in India and South Africa.
The series centres round domestic worker Kamla Jadhav (played by Shilpa Shirodkar) and the complicated relationship between herself, her employer, her employer's daughter Pakhi (Shirina Singh) and her own daughter Kalpi (Rachna Parulkar).
The story begins when Kamla and her employer Neetu (Tuhina Vohra) give birth on the same day. Neetu has a difficult time adjusting to motherhood and asks Kamla to help her with her baby.
Kamla wants to please because she wants her daughter to have a better life - she wants her to Reach for the Stars - so she pours herself into Neetu's child and starts neglecting her own daughter as a result.
The series explores this conflict and the impact it has on her family, specifically her daughter, her husband Vittal (Mohit Dagga) and Neetu's daughter.
The situation gets more intense for her when Vittal tries to improve the family's circumstances and gets accused of murder.
The series plays with time and flashes forward in years to focus on the two daughters and the consequences for them.
