It’s that time of the year when we look back at the best of 2017's TV shows and movies and what to look forward to in 2018. Without wasting any time let's dig in...

Top 5 Movies

2017 gave us Jordan Peele’s masterpiece Get Out, a movie that felt like a horror-social/satire-wish-fulfillment moment for black folks who are tired of white supremacy in every form.

After last year's #OscarSoWhite, Get Out was a big middle finger to Hollwood. It socked it to the middle class whiteness that use “politeness” as a cover for its prejudice - something that's not the mainstay as yet in Hollywood movies.

My Top 5 movies are:

  1. Get Out
  2. Logan
  3. Split
  4. Inxeba
  5. Wonder Woman
Honourary Mention: Birth of a Nation

Top Series

I was going to make this a Top 5 but opted to make it Top 10 'cause, if we are honest with ourselves, TV is making far more interesting than movies of late.

It’s not just about the big budget but even the subject matter in TV drama since the era of streaming has just given TV that thing that used to be reserved for HBO only.

Any of the Top 10 could have been number one. I'm choosing Legion as number 1 for me 'cause it blended great storytelling with daring visual treatment. Noah Hawley was not taking prisoners with this, he even managed to make the X-Men universe look cool once again.

He played with genre conventions and story writing conventions but still delivered on character and a journey.

Any of these Top 10 could be number one...

1. Legion
2. American Gods
3. Dear White People
4. She’s Gotta Have It
5. Westworld
6. Follow the Money (berdag)
7. Dark
8. Narcos Season 2
9. Insecure
10. Mindhunters

Honoury Mention : Star Trek Discovery

2018

So what is there to look forward to in 2018?

Here’s my list...

Top 10 Movies 2018

I will say it now... 2018 is going to be the year for everything Marvel and I believe Marvel is going to break the box office next year, starting with the Afrofuturistic Black Panther.

Folks have been waiting for more cool black superheroes to stand along Blade and Spawn in the casual movie-goer world and I believe Black Panther is going to do that.

With Ryan Coogler, the dude who gave us the hearbreaking Fruitvale Station and crowd pleasing Creed, this is going to be special.

If that wasn't enough, Sony in partnership with Marvel is finally giving Miles Morales aka the black-hispanic Spider-Man his own movie and tying it into the other versions of Spider-Man, including Peter Parker. The animation looks amazing and the soundtrack very cool - folks are going to be blown away.

Then there's the behemoth that took 10 years to make Infinity War. I forsee Infinity War going over that 2 billion mark.

  1. Black Panther
  2. Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
  3. Avengers: Infinity War
  4. DeadPool 2: Second Coming
  5. The Post
  6. Aquaman
  7. New Mutants
  8. 5 Fingers for Marseilles
  9. Incredibles 2
  10. Ready Player One
Honourary Mention : Inxeba (cause of the re-release)

Top 5 Series 2018

2018 sees the first female Doctor Who making an appearance, we see the return of Westworld and the rise of the machine expanding.

Netflix Marvel big hitters Jessica Jones, Daredevil and Luke Cage are all coming back with their own shows. 2018 promises to be FUN.

  1. Westworld 2
  2. Mindhunters 2
  3. Jessica Jones 2
  4. DareDevil 3
  5. Doctor Who
Honourary mention: Tjovitjo 2 (we live in hope)
