This from the Uzalo producers on the current albinism storyline...

Uzalo addresses attacks on people living with albinism

Uzalo’s latest storyline turns its attention to the increasing scourge of attacks on people living with Albinism in South Africa.

The scriptwriters have crafted a storyline that will raise awareness of the killings of people living with albinism. According to Health24, one in 4000 individuals in South Africa is estimated to be born with albinism.

The award-winning show has been consistent in its commitment to speaking to social issues, and with this story arch, the writers have embarked on a storyline that explores the killings of people living with albinism.

During the research process, it was found that in South Africa, majority of these killings take place in Kwa Zulu-Natal and Mpumalanga.

In the final week of August, viewers witnessed the Mthethwa family entering the Uzalo universe. The Mthethwa family unit comprises of Baba Mthethwa (Simphiwe Nxumalo) and his daughter Khwezi (Owethu Zulu), both of whom are living with albinism, and the matriarch, Gogo Mthethwa, played by the talented Keketso Semoko.

The storyline sees the family entering KwaMashu after fleeing from their home village in Manguza, where a million rand bounty has been placed on Khwezi’s head as part of a human trafficking syndicate that targets people living with albinism.

The storyline explores difficulties experienced by people living with albinism and works to debunk the various myths that surround them.

“Taking on this angle in our storyline has been a huge and emotional learning curve.” Says Mmamitse Thibedi, Uzalo’s Executive Producer. “People living with albinism are under enormous threat and there is little institutional support to address the unique issues they face.

"We were fortunate enough to work with an activist from the community, Mpho Tjope, who himself is a person living with albinism. He provided us with valuable insights that served to create a storyline that reflected the issues appropriately. It is our hope that the storyline creates awareness and helps to dispel the harmful myths that endanger the community,” says Mmamitse.

For the longest time i never cared for any character on tv like i cared for the Mthethwa family. I'm so sad and hurt. I mean when was the last time i watched tv i felt tears gushing in my eyes? I cant even remember. This is what happens when you tell a story that tugs at the heartstrings. Make me (the viewer), fall in love and care about the character!

But i thought the new family were staying... this means that after September the family will be gone? Just when i had started to fall in love with Bab' Mthethwa; and then wham - he gets to be killed off. I didn't expect that, it's so unfair. But if it suits the progression of the storyline, then good! What a bold way of raising awareness. Round of applause to Uzalo writers, Bongi Ndaba in particular, for being such a conscientious writer that she is. To think this is the daily fear of people living with albinism, so unfair. Thank you for showing us the fears and plight that people living with albinism are facing in their daily lives.
