When Damon Lindelof started the first episode of Watchmen with the real life Tulsa massacre of 1921, part of me wondered if he was using the incident as a device to launch the story or if it was going to be vital for the themes, sub-themes and plot of the series.
Well, Episode 2 starts with another historical event, this time based on World War 1's German propaganda writing aimed at black soldiers, which shows that Tulsa wasn't an exploitation of history for a sensational action scene.
Episode 2 started with the Germans trying to speak to the souls of the black soldiers, showing how they fought for a country that didn't value them and oppressed them - even on the frontlines the white commander spits in the black soldiers' faces.
The indignity of being black in the US, coupled with the fact that this is the same soldier we saw in Episode 1, whose family was killed during the massacare, hints at Damon Lindelof weaving a web with many, many connections.
Answers revealed
Episode 2 gave us a lot of answers that lead us to more questions... the writing is that good. For the smart folks out there you may have already suspected that the old man (a.k.a Louis Gossett Jnr's character) is the child of the black soldier that survived the massacre. I suspected this but I wasn't expecting him to be related to Regina King's Sister Knight.
Some of the answers revealed in Episode 2 include the fact that the old man is named Will Reeves and he's Sister Knight's grandfather... but it looks like Angela a.k.a Sister Knight doesn't know him. Why?
That is still to be revealed.
We discovered that the White Night happened over Xmas Eve. Yeah, the white racist chose Christmas Eve to kill cops at home with their families.
We got to understand why Angela has three white kids whilst her and her husband are black - they adopted their dead partners' kids.
We were also given a better understanding of the "Radforations" which are reparations for crimes committed against black people based on their race, which includes tax exemptions.
We understood the bond between Angela and the Chief of Police. Judd and Angela were the only two cops who were still willing to continue to be cops after the White Night.
But the reveal based on the transition from the masked shooter who shot Angela to Judd looking at Angela in bed hinted at something nefarious from Judd's side.
Even his apology for letting this happen... the shooting... which was a great set-up for one of the major reveals that Judd has a Klu Klux Klan uniform hidden in his wardrobe, meaning he may be part of the 7th Kalvary and a white supremicist.
So we went from feeling sorry for Angela who had to hug the dead body of her father figure to the shock that this dude may have been responsible for the White Night and many other police killings.
We got answers about the strange servants that Jeremy Irons' character has... that they are actually clones that he keeps killing off for his amusement in his play... I'm interested in seeing where this story goes 'cause thus far this story has not interacted with the main story.
A TV show in a TV show
For the fans of the classic comic book itself, we got to see a story within a story. This time the start of the Hooded Justice TV show whose backstory is only hinted at in the comics as the first costume hero.
In the comic we are made to believe he was killed by Mueller but in the TV show it's revealed Mueller and the Hooded Justice are the same person so the TV series seems to be fuctioning like Tales of the Black Fighter in the comics that told a separate story from the Rorschach investigation but tied into the investigation story thematically.
Ja nee, the plot thickened in Episode 02. I believe Mueller's Hooded Justice TV show will echo some themes around Angela's story.
New questions
So some of the new questoins that the series has raised are:
What happened to the black girl Will saved?
Who is Angela's other family member?
Is Senator Keene part of the nefarious conspiracy Will spoke about?
Who are the powers that be supporting Will?
What is Veidt's game paln?
Are the squids a government conspiracy?
Is Looking Glass part of the conspiacy?.
Let's keep walking down the rabbit hole into Oz together...
