Last week we had the big reveal that the loving, devoted Cal is Dr. Manhattan. Episode 8 gave us the incredible backstory of how Dr. Manhattan became Cal, how his and Angela's relationship started and we found out how Veidt got to Europa... let's dig in.
For fans of the comic book, this episode was great on many levels. For one, it is the first time where two characters from the original series interact, that being Veidt and Dr. Manhattan.
However, it gives us more imagery from the comic; the multiple screens, younger Veidt and Veidt the liar.
The interaction with Veidt and Dr. Manhattan is like the Batman / Superman interaction. One is a god (who's actually still more human than one truly acknowledges) and the other a human who sees himself more than just an ordinary human - but nonetheless an example of ordinary.
The interaction gives us answers about the rain squids and how the conspiracy around the Squid Attacks continues. We got answers about how and why Veidt got to Europa and his disdain of it. We even got Dr. Manhattan getting a glimpse of creating his own Utopia.
His Utopia is heavily influenced by Dr. Manhattan's childhood, including how the clones came about and how they speak to his character.
This was a big element of Episode 8 - getting Dr. Manhattan's backstory of the man, the god and his love affair with Angela.
This was very Memento-like, where the two characters are chatting and the show travels from the past and future and still comes back to the moment. It was an interesting device that worked beautifully, showcasing Regina and Yahya's acting chops.
The big reveal on how John became Cal and his love affarir with Angela was the heartbeat of the episode. Interesting to view, but also very moving.
I know some folks are not happy that Dr. Manhattan did not completely transform back to his original form, but I dug it. The uncomfortable mish-mash of Dr. Manhattan and Cal says a lot about Dr. Manhattan's state towards the end of the episode.
He is not completly himself as yet and it's interesting to see if it will be resolved next episode.
Will the white racists be able to kill and create their own Dr. Manhattan? Will Angela survive the episode? Will Will or Looking Glass save the guys? There's a lot to be seen in next week's episode.
It felt like: Memento meets Reservoir Dogs meets Watchmen.
