Today in Africa

Channel: CuriosityStream (DStv 185)
TX Time: 19h00
Genre: Documentary Series, Nature, Factual

Today in Africa

In human cultures in general, and perhaps particularly in Africa, the landscape is the first shrine of tradition.

From the sand dunes of Mauritania to the currents of River Senegal, to the Lions of the Beninese savannah to the spirits of the forests of Gabon, this series explores the origin, the nature and the survival of deep links between several populations in West Africa and their habitat.

Each episode takes us to discover an emblematic landscape: the river (Senegal), the desert (Mauritania), the forest (Gabon) and the savannah (Benin).

A compass of escape and meeting which rests on two main pillars: the spectacular character of the places, often classified with the UNESCO world heritage, and the charisma of the main characters who are transmitters of their respective traditions.

Episode 1 - Senegal: The Sentinels of the Water

Each day the sentinels of the water try to preserve their heritage in a world of dramatic change.

From Saint-Louis to Kayar, via the region of Sine Saloum, we meet Meissa Fall, bicycle repairer, the fishermen Pape Lamine and Elimane, and Ousmane, the salt harvester.

Episode 2 - Benin: The Guardians of the Spirits

In Benin, the keepers of the spirits preserve a powerful spirituality.

We meet Aténi, a follower of Voodoo, and Baba Fudji, a Toffina fisherman from the lake village of Ganvie.

Deen, a member of the Eco-Benin association, describes the mangrove sanctification ceremony.

Episode 3 - Mauritania: Sentinels of the Sands

Caught between the immensity of the Atlantic and that of the Sahara, Mauritania was born of wind and sand.

Today its men and women hand down its desert traditions. We meet Youbba, nomad patriarch of the Adrar region; Seif, custodian of Chinguetti's ancient manuscripts; and Nour, a fisherman.

Episode 4 - Gabon: The Sentinels of the Forest

Gabon's soul lies hidden beneath a thick green mantle, the source of most of the Gabonese traditions, medicines, spirituality, and resources.

A precious heritage that a small number of men and women protect. We meet Kombo, a Babongo hunter, and Juste, who is in touch with the forest spirits.

The Real Housewives of Dallas 4

Coming up this season: On the heels of adopting baby Bruin, the Redmond residence is crazier than ever.

This season, Brandi struggles to connect with her eldest daughter who is approaching her terrible tweens. Constantly juggling the needs of her three children, Brandi questions if she has room for more.

D'Andra's life-long dream of taking over the family business isn't going exactly the way she planned.

To make matters worse, her fiery feud with former bestie LeeAnne turns into a cold war leaving her to question if they'll ever be able to mend broken fences.

LeeAnne refuses to let anyone or anything rain on her impending nuptial parade. But an unexpected betrayal and a shocking allegation threatens to set this bride off.

After opening up about her struggle with depression, Stephanie continues to be more honest and true to herself, but not without complications.

An unforeseen feud with an assumed ally threatens to bring her to her breaking point.

Kameron jumps into this season with a renewed sense of fun and fabulousness.

But it's not all rosy for this blonde bombshell when a seemingly unforgivable faux pas from Brandi and Stephanie sends her into a fit over formalities.

Introduced to the ladies by D'Andra, new housewife, Kary Brittingham lives just down the street with her husband and four kids.

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, this self-proclaimed "feisty" female isn't afraid to speak the truth.

Kary makes fast friends with these Dallas divas, but her relationship with LeeAnne gets off to a rocky start.

Busy with her booming business, Cary Deuber has little time for Dallas drama except when supporting her former frenemy turned gal pal, LeeAnne as she celebrates her big day.

In the Season 4 premiere, "Of Friends and Frenemies": As her big day inches closer, LeeAnne is overwhelmed by the planning of her wedding.

D'Andra is thrown a curveball when she discovers the family business, which she finally inherited, isn't doing as well as she thought.

Meanwhile, Brandi has her hands full with baby Bruin but it's her eldest daughter Brooklyn who is challenging her most.

New Housewife Kary Brittingham, a friend of D'Andra, joins the divas of Dallas.

Originally from Guadalajara, Mexico, Kary is a feisty breath of fresh air, who tells it like it is – whether you want to hear it or not.

Stephanie hosts a "Friendtervention" in an attempt to help mend fences between former besties LeeAnne and D'Andra.

Kingdom of the Mummies

In the shadow of the world's oldest pyramids, a team of archaeologists led by Dr Ramadan Hussein have made the discovery of a lifetime - a fully intact burial complex buried deep beneath the sand.

Packed with treasures and world firsts, the site has the potential to re-write the book on mummification, unlocking secrets forgotten since the age of the pharaohs.

Now the team have to open every sarcophagus, investigate every mystery and decode every clue in this never before seen discovery - the first Egyptian funeral parlour ever found.

In addition to uncovering the first known, fully integrated funeral complex with dedicated areas for organ removal, embalming and burial, the team's learnings are helping reveal more about death - and the business of death - in ancient Egypt.

The latest scientific testing and scanning of the tombs, their relics and the remains of the deceased also add layers of meaning and context to the lessons being gleaned about the sacred rites and commerce that were conducted in this subterranean space.
