On 2 June, 2019, North Carolina teenager Paige Winter was swimming in waist-deep water when suddenly a shark attacked – and in an instant – life would never be the same.
Following her story for more than a year, this special chronicles her unprecedented journey: from the harrowing attack and months of rehabilitation to the trials, tribulations and struggles.
The special features 12 months of unfettered access to Winter and her family who – for the first time - share their story in the hopes of inspiring others.
This is a story of triumph over adversity: from the complicated surgeries and painful therapies that followed the attack, to Winter's first steps on her new prosthetic leg, and through all the rites of passage an American teen faces in her senior year of high school, from homecoming and the prom to graduation.
All the dramatic ups and downs converge in one moment when Winter and her family return to the beach where she nearly lost her life for the first time exactly one year after the attack.
When Winter was attacked, her father heroically beat off the predator and carried his daughter to safety.
After being airlifted to a trauma centre and undergoing multiple surgeries, Winter lost two fingers, and her left leg was amputated.

Nancy will also find a way forward with her adoptive father Carson Drew by becoming an investigator for his legal practice.
Her adventures will bring the Drew Crew standalone cases, new romances, and emotional journeys of self-reinvention as Nancy tries to navigate with both her biological parent and the man who raised her.
However, the compounding intrigue and menace of the Hudson family will ultimately force her to make a life-altering choice between her two fathers.
In the Season 2 premiere, "The Search for the Midnight Wraith": Nancy and the Drew Crew are still reeling from witnessing the visions of their deaths.
They realise even more so now that they need to come up with a plan to stop the Aglaeca before it's too late.
