The SABC's long awaited streaming and catch-up platform launched this morning, Thursday 17 November, swiping TelkomONE out of the way like an old copper line.
It's titled SABC+ because that's what everyone's doing these days, and it features live streams of SABC1,2,3, SABC News, SABC Education, Mindset and SABC Sport.
Hopefully this means sport will be directed onto the Sport channel more and more to set 1,2 and 3 free to be the channels they're supposed to be!
This isn't the case for the FIFA 2022 World Cup though as the SABC will be airing and streaming matches but they won't only be on SABC Sport because they're taking over SABC1 in December with major disruptions to the schedule as per usual.
In addition to the seven live channels on SABC+, there's extra content in the Edutainment category which includes shows from Discovery and Da Vinci, with a mix of various other genres e.g. Siba's Table cooking show.
The SABC's 19 radio stations are also available and the catch-up service features fan favourites in a mish mash of latest and past episodes.
Some shows only have the latest five episodes (e.g. Muvhango) while others have every season (e.g. The Estate) so it's impossible to tell what the standard set-up is. We presume this is because it's just launched and the platform needs housekeeping to clean up the randomness.
The whole shebang is essentially a rebrand of the TelkomONE website and app. As you'll see, it has the same layout, the login process is the same and if you forget your password and change it, it tells you you can now proceed to TelkomONE once you're done, LOL.
There's subscription content too under a section called AMP (next to Edutainment) that features a selection of paid for channels and other series - this was available on TelkomONE too. Channels include BBC World News, Real Time and Fashion TV and prices range from R7 per day to R49 for a month.
