Fast electric cars and flashy drivers in the Monaco of South Africa.
That's how we picture this weekend's Formula E-Prix which revs up in Cape Town for the first time.
It's happening on the streets of Green Point, around the stadium, starting with the first practice this Friday 24 February, leading up to the main race on Saturday afternoon.
e.tv will air the main race live on Saturday, with a broadcast starting at 16h00.
SuperSport will be covering the whole event on the Motorsport (215), Blitz (200) and Variety channels (206 - 209). Select highlights will also be on Catch Up.
The build-up sessions and main race will air on Motorsport at these times:
Friday 24 February 2023
Practice 1 at 16h55
Saturday 25 February 2023
Practice 2 at 09h05
Qualifying at 11h30
Main race at 15h30
The behind-the-scenes coverage will be across the channels and on Catch Up and will feature pit walks and close-ups on the mechanics, VIP and schleb guests, shadow laps and the comings and goings of the drivers.
Here's a round-up of the must know details in eight pit stops:
1. The format: 11 teams of two drivers compete over 16 races in 11 different countries, so some countries have more than one race.
2. The Cape Town circuit is 2.921km and described like so:
"A fast-paced track, with bumpy braking zones, a tight chicane at Turns 4, 5 and 6 with a pacy, eye-of-the-needle section midway around the lap."
Here's a graphic of what it looks like...
3. The Attack Mode sections refer to booster areas where drivers can turbo charge their speed, as in a TV game.
It allows them to deliver an extra 50kW of power for four minutes - either used in segments of two minutes each, or in a three-one split.
4. Cars can go up to 320km/h.
5. South African racer Kelvin van der Linde will be racing in team ABT Cupra - he's been a reserve driver for the team since 2020.
He made his debut last month when he stood in for Dutch racer Robin Frijns who injured his hand badly in a crash. He told the Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf that a bone was sticking out of his hand!
6. The Cape Town race is the fifth of the season.
7. This is the ninth season of the event.
