Idols 19: Thando times out at Top 6

Saturday's Top 6 Idols finalists tackled two songs each in what turned out to be a torrid time for Thando Mdluli who was eliminated and had no opportunity to perform the songs he'd prepared.

He followed in the footsteps of some of his icons, namely former Idols contestants Brendon, Lloyiso and Shekhinah, who know what it feels like to get the chop.

The remaining six wannabes performed songs based on two themes: a nod to memorable auditions by previous Idols contestants and a song by Grammy Award winners.

Here's a recap by Mzansi Magic:

Envic emerged as the first contestant to own the stage, in homage to Karabo's rendition of Nathi’s Nomvula.

He then delivered a heartfelt performance of When a Man Loves a Woman by David Foster.

"You're destined for stardom," noted Somizi Mhlongo, while JR Bogopa advised him on fine-tuning his stage theatrics.

Faith followed, revisiting Lennymars' audition with Daniel Caesar's Best Part and later grooving to Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing.

However, the night wasn't entirely in his favour. "You must grasp the essence of a hit song," critiqued Somizi, with Thembi Seete adding concerns about the song's arrangement.

Astonishing everyone with her take on Thapelo's audition, Niikiey performed Inkanyezi by Mondli Ngcobo, and later Knocks You Down by Keri Hilson.

Thembi acknowledged her unmatched versatility while Somizi emphasised her rich and distinct voice, urging her not to compromise her talent.

Thabo chose Moipone's audition song, I Want to Know What Love Is by Foreigner, which had the audience singing along.

His soul-stirring rendition of In Love with Another Man by Jazmine Sullivan brought tears to many eyes. A deeply moved Somizi said, "I've never seen someone fight so hard. You've proven that the divine truly exists through music."

Nkosi took on Samkelo's version of Seal’s Kiss From A Rose, but his rendition of John Legend's All of Me fell short for the judges.

Somizi remarked on his wavering confidence, while JR felt a lack of heart in the performance.

Last but not least, Princess stunned with her interpretation of Loveness's audition, Beyoncé's Dangerously in Love, and followed up with a powerful performance of Falling by Alicia Keys. "You blew the roof off tonight.

You showed me that South Africa has talent that can compete globally," declared JR, praising her incredible act.

Idols SA's grand finale is fast approaching on 4 November. Next week, the Top 5 will be mentored by multi-platinum Gospel artist Dr. Tumi.
