Please note: We've posted updates to this article in the replies underneath it.

Dear beloved readers and Muvhango fans... it pains us to bring you this news and in this sudden, extreme manner.

As you may know, there have been no Muvhango teasers this month, a first in the history of TVSA.

We've been requesting them from the SABC but they haven't been available and we've noticed that the show's Twitter account didn't Tweet for the whole of June.

Also the cast has been on break for ages - each time we've called to enquire about something - and yesterday TVSA member Sulaiman Isaacs posted that the latest season would be ending this week, a short season of only 130 episodes.

We've been trying to uncover what's going on, asking both the SABC and the show's production house Word of Mouth Pictures but there's been no clarity until tonight, 2 July.

Word of Mouth spokesperson Thanduxolo Jindela tells TVSA that there are no teasers because the show has shut down.

He tells us that the finale episode airs tonight.

Immediately and just like that. It's heartbreaking for such a thing to happen to a long-running legendary show!

We feel your hurt if it's going to impact on you.

As we told you earlier this year, the latest season of Generations was touch and go and things were resolved but clearly the behind-the-scenes negotiations for a new season of Muvhango have failed.

We'll keep you posted when we hear anything further.

This is really sad. I'm a huge fan of the show. It has produced many great actors, actresses, directors and script writer. It is really disrespectful for the SABC to abruptly end the show like that. We should have been prepared honestly. What's their plan now? More repeats and reruns? I really hope this issue is resolved soon and we get to see more of this iconic and legendary production.

This is the SABC's response to our query about the future of Muvhango and whether it's been renewed or cancelled - came in at 19h30 last night:

“SABC2 announces that the channel, from tonight (3 July), will take the Muvhango viewers down memory lane with the broadcast of the retro episodes of this iconic soapie. Muvhango debuted in 1997, broadcasting once a week and grew to become a daily soapie.

As part of celebrating 30 Years of Democracy, SABC 2 will broadcast Muvhango starting from season 1 and provide an opportunity to showcase the historical moments of this iconic production to audiences who may not have seen the show from the beginning.

Muvhango is the first ever Tshivenda television drama and has presented South African citizens who have not travelled to Venda with an opportunity to have a closer glance at one of the most beautiful places in the country.

The episodes aim to celebrate the success that Muvhango has been to the SABC and the South African citizens. Having been on air for 27 years is a massive milestone and reflects the remarkable talent of the cast and crew of this production and its management team”.

Lol it's like the SABC is not sure what to do itself. Can we atleast get a proper conclusion to the show. Can they atleast keep that in mind. This is so frustrating. I feel for the actors and the production team, not knowing what's happening

Hi Sulaiman, thanks for posting the link.

Hi Lorenz, yes, the SABC held an event last night to say that the show's returning for a new season with cast additions, a new logo and title sequence.

New cast members include Wiseman Zitha, Tyson Mathonsi and Leleti Khumalo who plays construction mogul Dr Nonhlanhla Ximba.

Also, Liteboho Molise's returning to reprise her role as Teboho.

Turns out we were manipulated into believing that the show had shut down and that the final episode aired that night - they just said it to buy more time and to build hype.

Here's a quote from SABC's Acting Group Executive Lala Tuku from last night that includes the marketing strategy:

"The reality is that, you know, the SABC derives it's revenue from advertising spend. We require audiences to choose SABC and to choose our content and it's a heavy one that I start with but the reality is that we have brilliant content on our platform and we need our audiences to select and come in.

"At the end of the day it was a tussle in the negotiating room around keeping a legacy property which we all believed in, all of us including the board. At the end of the day is it about the rands and cents and so ultimately the authenticity of the show, the boldness of the storytelling, the uniqueness - we just couldn't do away with it.

"So here we are, we really are proud, we fought with the team as well - but I must say to our marketing department, they were like 'We're gonna run with it, we're gonna say that it's finished and it's going to 30 years,' and we were so glad that everyone went with it and we hope that this was a beautiful reveal of a show that we really believe in."

It's a similar misleading narrative as what happened when they said that Gabriel Temudzani was leaving his role as Azwindini when he wasn't.

The new season starts on 5 August but this could change - we're waiting for confirmation on this and will let you know.
