Shocker! Muvhango shuts down after 27 years

Dear beloved readers and Muvhango fans... it pains us to bring you this news and in this sudden, extreme manner.

As you may know, there have been no Muvhango teasers this month, a first in the history of TVSA.

We've been requesting them from the SABC but they haven't been available and we've noticed that the show's Twitter account didn't Tweet for the whole of June.

Also the cast has been on break for ages - each time we've called to enquire about something - and yesterday TVSA member Sulaiman Isaacs posted that the latest season would be ending this week, a short season of only 130 episodes.

We've been trying to uncover what's going on, asking both the SABC and the show's production house Word of Mouth Pictures but there's been no clarity until tonight, 2 July.

Word of Mouth spokesperson Thanduxolo Jindela tells TVSA that there are no teasers because the show has shut down.

He tells us that the finale episode airs tonight.

Immediately and just like that. It's heartbreaking for such a thing to happen to a long-running legendary show!

We feel your hurt if it's going to impact on you.

As we told you earlier this year, the latest season of Generations was touch and go and things were resolved but clearly the behind-the-scenes negotiations for a new season of Muvhango have failed.

We'll keep you posted when we hear anything further.

This is really sad. I'm a huge fan of the show. It has produced many great actors, actresses, directors and script writer. It is really disrespectful for the SABC to abruptly end the show like that. We should have been prepared honestly. What's their plan now? More repeats and reruns? I really hope this issue is resolved soon and we get to see more of this iconic and legendary production.

This is the SABC's response to our query about the future of Muvhango and whether it's been renewed or cancelled - came in at 19h30 last night:

“SABC2 announces that the channel, from tonight (3 July), will take the Muvhango viewers down memory lane with the broadcast of the retro episodes of this iconic soapie. Muvhango debuted in 1997, broadcasting once a week and grew to become a daily soapie.

As part of celebrating 30 Years of Democracy, SABC 2 will broadcast Muvhango starting from season 1 and provide an opportunity to showcase the historical moments of this iconic production to audiences who may not have seen the show from the beginning.

Muvhango is the first ever Tshivenda television drama and has presented South African citizens who have not travelled to Venda with an opportunity to have a closer glance at one of the most beautiful places in the country.

The episodes aim to celebrate the success that Muvhango has been to the SABC and the South African citizens. Having been on air for 27 years is a massive milestone and reflects the remarkable talent of the cast and crew of this production and its management team”.

Lol it's like the SABC is not sure what to do itself. Can we atleast get a proper conclusion to the show. Can they atleast keep that in mind. This is so frustrating. I feel for the actors and the production team, not knowing what's happening
