The good news: kykNET reality low Die Brug and SABC2's long-running children's educational property Takalani Sesame have been nominated for 2024 International Emmy Awards.
As you may know, Die Bruuuuuug is our local adaptation of the international series The Bridge and it was super in every aspect, except for the voiceover which was over the top and too drawn out.
It's been nominated in the Non-Scripted Entertainment category.
Takalani Sesame, which received a nod last year too, has been nominated in the Kids: Factual category for a special titled Big Feelings.
Which brings us to our Big Feelings...
The Bad News: Mzansi Magic's Shaka iLembe is nowhere to be seen. What a joke!
This undermines these awards because no-one can convince us that it doesn't deserve a nomination in the Drama Series category.
It's the best show to have come out of South Africa in many years - if ever - and it's an indictment on the International Emmy judges that they aren't aware of this.
It falls into the stipulated dates perfectly because the nominations are for shows that aired outside of America between 1 January 2023 and 31 December 2023.
We've asked Mzansi Magic if it was entered and they tell us, yes it was - production house Bomb entered it.
It's shocking that it hasnt received a single nomination for anything because it's exactly the sort of show that would add excitement and status to the International Emmys.
It's unique, authentically local to its country and buzzworthy - these awards need that to attract diverse audiences from around the world.
We've asked Mzansi Magic whether or not it was entered and will update once we hear.
Until then, let's try not to be too bitter while manifesting a win for Die Brug and Takalani Sesame.
