Once a year, in winter, the town of Paarl comes to a standstill when thousands of people flock to this picturesque Boland town.
Families and friends are divided and pick sides. Sporting events across nearly all disciplines are played.
Even the trees in the streets are decorated – blue and white for Boys' High and Girls' High; maroon, green and gold for Gimmies.
The interschools week between Paarl Gimnasium and Boishaai and Girls' High, also known as Paarl Boys' High and Paarl Girls' High, is the largest of its kind in the world.
Especially the showdown between the first boys' rugby teams which always causes fever-pitch excitement - a climax of years of sacrifice and hard work.
In Rugby of Niks, an eight-episode documentary series, the spirit of this legendary school rugby match is explored.
It looks at how character is built, personal challenges are confronted, and life lessons are learned on and off the field.
Rugby of Niks offers a unique behind-the-scenes look - from the preparation process to the big day at Faure Stadium - and reveals how professional school rugby has become.
The series also highlights the rich heritage of players shaped by this interschools tradition, including legendary names such as Kobus Wiese, Balie Swart, Jean de Villiers, Marius Joubert, Schalk Burger, Handré Pollard, Corné Krige, Frans Malherbe, Mannetjies Roux and even actor Edwin van der Walt.
This match is not just a showcase of talent but also a glimpse into the future of South African rugby.
In addition to the players from the two school teams, the series features interviews with coaches and well-known figures like Jean de Villiers, Schalk Burger, Breyton Paulse, Corné Krige and Edwin van der Walt, who share their memories.
