Fighting for rights
TAKING things for granted comes easily to many of us and it’s a sad case when the value of something diminishes simply because it has become commonplace.
Iron Jawed Angels on M-Net tonight at 8.30 is the true story of a group of strong-willed women in the 1920s who decided that they would fight for their right to vote.
Led by American feminist Alice Paul, played by Oscar-winner Hilary Swank, the group of women acquired the nickname “iron jawed angels” after going on a hunger strike when they were thrown in jail for standing up for their beliefs.
Never mind that the cast itself is incredible, including fine actors like Patrick Dempsey and Julia Ormond, but this is the type of movie that should give a wake-up call to those of us, especially women, who forget that what is ours now was not easily fought for.
Next time there’s a general election, bi-election, municipal election or even a vote for class president, it would be prudent to remember that the vote is a powerful thing.
By voting, you are allowed to make your voice heard, loud and clear, and the voting process is a mechanism that separates us from the animal kingdom.
Your vote could topple a government.
May all of us today take a lesson from the “iron jawed angels” of yesteryear.
Some things, you only take for granted until you lose them, and that is something no South African would want.
The “X” is precious.
