Cha-cha-cha-changing
HOW MUCH of yourself would you change at the insistence of someone else?
In Isidingo tonight (SABC3, 6.30pm daily), poor timid Tim is set to undergo a makeover at the hands of his crush, Natasha Wallace.
Tim’s band, The Wattles, scored a regular spot on her show and she reckons that while they play well, their taste in clothes leaves a lot to be desired. Hence the makeover she has insisted on to make them “cool” enough to continue playing on television.
It will be interesting to see how she manages to make Tim part with his retro style, though quite honestly I don’t think there is anything wrong with the way he dresses in the first place. His laid-back way of dressing suits his character, and his insecurities as a person play out often in a wacky choice of shirt he wears; just enough to demand attention, but he’s too self-conscious to pull it off.
Makeovers are strange things. Most people, as they move through the various stages of life, tend to have mini-makeovers all the time. For example, a woman may morph from teenybopper cool to student chic to corporate power suit in a matter of years.
Sometimes a makeover is inspired by losing or gaining weight or by a change in location. When I moved from sunny Amanzimtoti to at-times-freezing Grahamstown, boardshorts swiftly made way for jeans and trackers.
But to force a makeover on someone else? I’m not too sure about that.
Here’s hoping little Timmy likes his new look.
