WHO WOULD have guessed that over 18000 South Africans took the time to complete the Survivor South Africa entry form, post it or download it.
Out of all those entries, just 14 were picked and, according to some pre-Survivor publicity, they were subjected to all manner of weird tests before they were deemed suitable.
On Sunday, they packed their packs, kissed their loved ones goodbye, lied to everyone else about where they were disappearing to, and headed for Panama.
I tell you, my nerves would be shot by now.
There is a shroud of secrecy over the whole Survivor process to protect suspense. Heavy penalties will be meted out should any contestant break the confidentiality agreement they had to sign. I’m glad there is an acknowledgement that the best way to handle a show is to hype it for all its worth.
With the American Survivors, stumbling onto the winner on the Internet is far too easy and it ruins the rest of the series for the real fan.
Tonight’s Survivor: Guatemala (SABC3, 7.30pm) should be a humdinger of an episode. Avid fans would know that after last week’s tribal council, the remaining members of Yaxha were told to join up with Nakum in the much-anticipated merge of the season.
From now on, alliances mean everything, individual immunity is what you want, it’s a short way to the final four. Ultimately, the next Survivor champion will emerge and, if the series hasn’t been spoiled yet, it’s anybody’s guess who will outwit, outplay and outlast everyone else for $1million.
