IF YOU thought high-powered celebs had it all, you were half right.
Oodles of cash? Check. Access to anywhere, anytime? Check. Members of the opposite sex falling all over themselves to be with you (or above-mentioned cash)? Check.
But, as Tom Cruise has found out, money can’t buy you respect.
Tonight SABC3 broadcasts the dated VH1 glimpse into The Fabulous Life of Tom Cruise at 7.30pm. It’s obviously dated because while the programme uncovers the spending habits of this multi-gazillionaire, no mention is made of wife-to-be fembot Katie Holmes or little Suri.
What gave it away was the tagline right at the top of the promo: Tom Cruise: possibly the most popular actor on the planet.
Erm ... maybe this was the case in Tom’s glory days as the manly Maverick in Top Gun, or even when he charmed the pants off Renee Zellweger in Jerry McGuire.
Anyone living in the world for the past year will be well aware that Tom has fallen from being hunk deluxe to fruitcake Scientologist with well-developed control freak tendencies. The tabloids have had a field day analysing his relationship with the much younger Holmes and urban slang has even included the phrase “jump the couch” – meaning, “gone over the edge” – as a nod to Tom’s bizarre behaviour on an episode of Oprah.
If you do watch tonight’s Fabulous Life of Tom Cruise, bear in mind that a lot has happened in the life of this Hollywood heavyweight since the programme first aired.
In some ways, I think Cruise’s life has become a little less fabulous lately.
