FAME IS a funny thing. Most of us mere mortals have fantasised about being famous, wondered about what it would be like to have screaming fans bow down before us and wanted to know what it would be like to have instant access to the hottest spots in Hollywood and the like.
But I’m sure that most of us recognise the down side.
Most obvious would be the complete loss of privacy. What is the point of being able to own an island if there’s a team of paparazzi camped on the boundaries waiting for your cozzie to fall off as their shutter snaps ... then reading about the incident in tomorrow’s gossip pages?
Jokes aside, there is enough intrigue from us “commoners” to warrant the coverage which gives rise to programmes such as the ever-entertaining and pinch-of-salt informative E! True Hollywood Story (Dstv, Channel 41) that appear at various times.
I have no qualms about admitting to watching these “true” accounts of how the stars rose from cute kiddies into where they are now.
The coverage invariably uncovers the clay feet of the stars and the channel tries to give a balanced view of these people who seem to have it all.
What I would like to know is how they get hold of the “family friends” who speak so candidly of their famous friends. Do they get paid enormous amounts of cash to give their opinions on why so-and-so became such a success/failure, or do they volunteer of their own accord?
If I were famous, I think I would definitely reserve the right to veto whatever comes out of the mouths of those who claim to know me so well.
After all, it’s my dirty laundry they’re airing.
