Poppy Ntshongwana is a South African radio DJ and events MC best known as a presenter on 5FM, since 2005. She began as a contributor to the Fresh Drive and later landed her own show.
She discovered her love for radio at the Diocesan High School for Girls in Grahamstown, where she joined the DJ club and started playing at socials. She went on to study politics at the University of Pretoria, and started her career in radio at TuksFM in 2003.
From there it was only a matter of time before her personality drew the attention of 5FM, and she was head hunted in 2005.
With her ambitious and driven nature, Poppy worked her way up. She started as a news reader, where she could indulge her passion for current affairs and her love for radio.
She soon joined the Fresh Drive, and became the major contributor of the team that she is today. She's also had her own show since 2007, starting with the New Sound Selection on Sundays 17h00 – 18h00, before moving onto the KFC Global Express chart show on Saturdays 10h00 – 14h00.
From there she landed the weekday early breakfast show before Gareth Cliff 03h00 – 06h00. And these days Poppy has her own show on Sundays 10h00 – 14h00, and the Power Night of Pop on Tuesday nights 22h00 – 23h55.
As Poppy has grown in stature, the public has gotten to know her with all her eclectic chic. Her adventurous spirit comes out in her love for trying new things like shark cage diving, skiing and surfing. Her sporty side has shone through with her getting involved in activities like the Cape Argus Cycle Tour.
Above everything, she does it with style. She's been noted as a fashionista when she won the 2010 SA Style Award for Most Innovative Style.
Poppy has become so much more than just a pretty voice on the radio. She loves mixing it up in the DJ box at all the hottest clubs around the country. She's emceed events like Miller Rock the Boat 2009/2010, the 2010 GQ Best Dressed Man Awards and KFC Taste the Fame 2009/2010. And she hosted TRL, the first ever Radio and TV collaboration in Africa.
She's even tried her hand at television presenting as a guest presenter on Mzansi Magic Travel Show, and she presented at the MK Awards of 2010.
Poppy has also modelled for the Levis and Cosmopolitan Denim Issue, the Heat Magazine Beauty Edition and the launch of Vaseline Intensive Care Cocoa Butter. She is also the face of Plum shoes.
In 2012 she appeared on the e.tv reality competition Tropika Island of Treasure 4.
