Ernest Borgnine (24 January, 1917 – 8 July, 2012) was an American actor best known for his starring role as Dominic Santini in the action drama television series Airwolf, from 1984-1986.
In 1955, Borgnine starred in the film version of the television play Marty, which gained him an Academy Award for Best Actor. He subsequently appeared in many movies, sometimes in lead roles, but more often as a supporting major star.
In later years he had a recurring role as Mermaid Man in the animated series SpongeBob SquarePants and has made guest appearances in television shows such as Pinky And The Brain; The Single Guy; JAG; Early Edition; Walker, Texas Ranger; Touched By An Angel; 7th Heaven and The District.
Borgnine died of renal failure on 8 July, 2012, at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles. His wife and children were at his side. He was 95 years old.
