Born in Hong Kong to Australian Parents, Richard grew up during the last years of British rule in the region. His father Russell Cawthorne was an executive for Golden Harvest Studios, and his mother Zelda, a journalist and Arts and Features editor for the South China Morning Post.

In 2010, Richard won the role of Dennis Allen, a prominent figure in Melbourne's criminal history during the 1980's in the Australian crime drama Killing Time.
Although delayed due to legal proceedings in 2010, Killing Time was eventually giving the green light to air in 2011 which led to Richard being nominated and subsequently winning the Australian Academy Award (AACTA Award, formally AFI) for Best Guest or Supporting Actor in a Television Drama.
In 2012 he had a starring role in another true life drama series, Bikie Wars: Brothers in Arms, as Foggy, a member of the Comancheros.
