Botha started studying drama at the University of Stellenbosch in 2006 but his studies were cut short after five months, because in May of that year, while on tour with Nicholis Louw in Port Elizabeth, he auditioned for Afrikaans Idols.
In August, he was crowned runner-up and a week later he was the owner of a recording contract with Sony Music. In October 2007 he packed up and moved to Johannesburg.
His debut album, Kô Ma Hier, was released later in that year. In the same year, he won the Huisgenoot Tempo-Award for the Best Newcomer and also became the face of House & Home.
2009 heralded the launch of his album, Sê My Nou. He also won his first international award in the EuroStar Awards, presented by Eurovision. The track, Dis Alles 'n Miracle (Everything's a Miracle), from his debut album, won in the category for Best Original Afrikaans song.
In 2010 he made his film debut in the movie Liefling and performed in a tribute show to Michael Jackson with Emo Adams.
In 2013 he had his first starring role in television in the role of Frederik de Witt in kykNET's period drama series Donkerland.
