Gina Torres is an American actress best known to TV audiences for her action roles in numerous sci-fi and fantasy shows.
Born to Cuban parents in Manhattan, New York Gina is the youngest of three children. Her family moved to Washington Heights when she was a youngster and then relocated to The Bronx.
She went to school at the Fiorello LaGuardia School of Arts and trained in opera and jazz.
After graduating from high school she made her professional debut as the lead in a Connecticut production of Dreamgirls. Over the next several years she performed in various stage productions and played the lead on Broadway in The Best Little Whorehouse Goes Public and Face Value.
She also starred in Antigone, Blood Wedding, A Raisin in the Sun and Ma Rainey's Black Bottom and Hair Show.
In 1995 she was cast in a recurring role on the daytime soap One Life and went on to portray numerous action heroines in the shows Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, Xena: Warrior Princess, Firefly, Angel, and Cleopatra 2525, for which she won an ALMA Award for Outstanding Lead Actress.
She plays Julia Milliken, a woman who has an affair with Wayne Palmer, in the third season of 24 (2004) and she stars as Cheryl Carerra in the 2006 action romance series Standoff.
Her other TV credits include guest appearances in Any Day Now, The Agency, Alias, The Guardian, The Shield and Without a Trace. She also provides the voice of Vixen on the animated series Justice League.
Gina's film credits include The Matrix Reloaded, The Matrix Revolutions (2003), Fair Game (2005), Jam (2006), the political thriller Five Fingers (2006), South of Pico (2007) and I Think I Love My Wife (2007).
