Lucy Lawless is a New Zealand actress and singer who's best known for her role as the warrior princess Xena in the television series of the same name.
She discovered her love of acting and singing at secondary school and went on to Auckland University where she studied languages. After a year she left her studies to travel Germany and Switzerland with her boyfriend Garth Lawless who she married in 1988.
Their daughter Daisy was born in 1988 and both her and Garth worked at a mining company in Australia while Lucy worked on breaking into TV.
In 1991 she studied acting at William Davis Center for Actors in Vancouver and made guest appearances in various New Zealand TV series between 1990 and 1995 including two different characters in the show Hercules: The Legendary Journies.
In 1995 the show introduced a new character called Xena, the actress who was originally intended to play her had to pull out, Lucy was cast in the role and the character proved so popular that Xena: Warrior Princess was created to give her and the character a show of their own.
She divorced Garth Lawless in 1995 and in 1998 she married Xena's executive producer Robert G. Tapert. They have two children - Julius and Judah.
