Bio
Andrae Gonzalo believes that a love of fashion need not only be the sole propriety of the superficial and the dim.
Born, reared, and educated in LA, California, Gonzalo attributes his philosophy of design to this city's weather patterns. He maintains that in Los Angeles, clothing speaks of the wearer's identity, never saying merely that "it's cold outside".
His work revolves around an attempt to utilize the craft of sewing as both a method to create a garment, and as a means for engaging in a dialogue about the times in which we live.
Clothes by Andrae Gonzalo attempt to go beyond being a "fabulous dress" or a "cute top that works well with jeans". Each garment is intended to function as a living communication device that has the power to spawn intriguing conversations, or simply just prepare you to meet your fashion arch-nemesis.
Each season's design process begins with a comment on the current events of the day. It ends as innovative sportswear, classically derived, but constructed through unconventional means and materials.
Gonzalo utilizes sewing machines in much the same manner that the French haute couture uses the human hand. He frequently contrasts elements of poverty and luxury, as well as the vernacular of fashion history to comment upon life in Los Angeles, or the current state of American culture.
Past collections have sprung from unusual places, with inspiration ranging from the US government's fashion restrictions during WWII, to the gay porn industry of he 1970's.
Andreagonzalo Losangeles, Gonzalo's eponymous label, debuted in the spring of 2003.
