Djimon Hounsou is a Benin-born American actor best known for his roles in the movies Amistad, Gladiator, Lara Croft Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life and Blood Diamond.
Hounsou was born in Cotonou, Benin and emigrated to Paris with one of his brothers when he was 13. He lived on the streets until he was discovered by fashion designer Thierry Mugler, who made him a model. His modelling subsequently led to acting roles.
He has had recurring roles on the television shows ER and Alias, and has had guest starring roles on Beverly Hills, 90210 and Soul Food.
