Babes Mphatseng was a South African actor, director and teacher best known for his role as Phineas, the Cherry Blossom’s handyman/gardener/bell hop, in the SABC2 sitcom Moferefere Lenyalong, from 2008-2012.
He received a Provincial Legends Award in 2007 from Cosatu for his work in theatre.
Fluent in seven languages, he was involved in acting, directing and teaching in both professional and community theatre for years.
He performed in productions at all of South Africa’s major theatres and written several well-received plays.
Mphatseng died on Sunday 14 December 2014, on his way to hospital after complaining of flu-like symptoms. He was 52.
