Queen Modjadji is a South African television period drama series inspired by the Balobedu rainmaker, the first Queen Modjadji, whose bloodline has ruled Southern Africa's Lobedu clan for centuries.
Born to the throne and blessed with an elemental ancestral gift, her reign gave rise to a succession of hereditary queens.
Her story is the story of a matriarchal dynasty, whose ability to transform the clouds and summon the rain has earned the Balobedu royalty a place among the most revered of African dynasties.
Makoma Mohale stars as Maselekwani (Queen Modjadji), the young queen-in-waiting who brings about a golden age of peace and prosperity to the land.
Ngele Ramulondi plays the young Modjadji, 14-year-old Maselekwani.
Masutang Hope Rasekele is Dzugudini, the daughter of the Rain King and the mother of Queen Modjadji, who is a crucial part in the Lobedu history as she is instrumental in saving the kingdom from a catastrophe of drought.
Helen Lebepe stars as Raisibe, who assists Modjadji with a view into the real world of her people and who grows to become her confidante.
Thabo Bopape plays the Supreme Mambo / King of the Kharanga Kingdom, who is obsessed with becoming the greatest rainmaker and is racing against time to fix his mistakes and restore the balance as required by his ancestors to end a severe drought.
Shudu Musida is Muthanoni Mulalo, one of the king / queen's wives from the VhaVenda Royal Family.
Ndavi Nokeri plays the role of Muthanoni Khensani, another one of the wives from the VaTsonga Royal Family.
Other cast members include Mudi Mudau as Khadikhulu, Maselekwani's Rakhadi (aunt) and head teacher and advisor; and Putla Sehlapelo as Ramulodi, keeper of the secret and king's keeper.
There's also Priscilla Raboroko as young Raisibe, the daughter of young Maselekwani's minders, and Maselekwani's childhood companion and trusted friend.
Aubrey Mmakola plays Kgoshi Mampuru, who was the king of the neighbouring Bapedi Kingdom; and Moses Raseleke is Mphabantshi, the Royal healer, prophecy teller and spiritual leader.
Sipho Ndlovu plays General Phaahla, the cunning general of the Bapedi Kingdom; and Candy TsaMaNdebele plays Muyahabo, one of Mambo Mugodo's wives and stepmother to Maselekwani.
