Synopsis
Who says you can't go home again? Hit comic D.L. Hughley takes a raucously funny journey back to his childhood.
Taped on 10 July, 1999 before a live audience at the Belk Theatre in Charlotte, NC, Hughley's special focuses on his upbringing and his mother, who ran a strict household.
"She knew all your friends, and, if she didn't, you couldn't play with them," he recalls.
Since he grew up with a tough mother he has a hard time relating to recent school violence, asking, "How do you make 90 bombs and your mama don't know shit?!!?"
Hughley says there were no "time outs" when he was growing up, noting, "A 'time out' is how long your ass was knocked out for."
Hughley also discusses relationships, differences in races, school violence, marriage, the NRA, jail, the Constitution and religion.
He says white people will get help for kids with learning disabilities; by contrast, "black folks won't admit the child has a problem, even if the kid is walking around with a football helmet and cowboy boots. 'There ain't a damn thing wrong with that boy. What if a Superbowl and rodeo breaks out?'
As for the NRA and its president, Charlton Heston, Hughley observes, "you know it's a rough-ass world when Moses is packin'." He recounts a possible exchange between Moses and the Pharaoh: " 'I want you to let my people go...from the book of Smith & Wesson, Chapter 357.' "
Star of the hit sitcom The Hughleys, D.L. Hughley started doing stand-up after his barber challenged him to participate in a comedy showdown at a club in his hometown of South Central Los Angeles.
Following more club appearances, he landed a hosting gig for BET's Comic View. Hughley's previous HBO appearances include his breakthrough performance on Russell Simmons' Def Comedy Jam, and two half-hour solo specials, 1992's One-Night Stand, and 1994's HBO Comedy Half-Hour.
The executive producers of D.L. Hughley: Goin' Home are D.L. Hughley, Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky and Sandy Chanley; producer, Tom Bull; director, Keith Truesdell; written by D.L. Hughley.
