Disney Cookabout is a South African comedic adventure game show for children that uses food preparation, cooking and outdoor exploration to showcase local ingredients and a fun-filled approach to healthy eating.
Chef Kirsten (Kirsten Mohamed) and her side-kick Sous Chef Mthunzi (Mthunzi Ntoyi) host the show and together this comedic duo demonstrate to a dynamic group of 'cooktestants' how to create simple and appetizing meals.
As each cooktestant is sent on an excursion to find supplies, they explore South Africa's fresh, locally farmed, wholesome produce, giving insights to the food we often only see in supermarkets or on our dining room tables.
Once the ingredients are collected, the team is transported to the magical Cookabout Kitchen where anything can happen, from doors and drawers sliding open and appliances responding to secret voice commands. Mickey Mouse cartoon shorts are added into the mix as well.
Each week, the cooktestants battle it out to take home the Silver Spoon as they carry out challenges at the various locations and attempt to create the tastiest dish in the kitchen – all in a race to be awarded the Cookabout Golden Trophy.
Disney Cookabout is produced by Penguin Films for Walt Disney Television. It is the first collaboration between The Walt Disney Company Africa and SABC of a long-form series in South Africa. The first episode was directed by Natalie Haarhoff.
