Big Up is a moral youth lifestyle magazine series that celebrates young South Africans who are sacrificing their leisure and disposable income to help their communities.
The series premiered on SABC1 on Sunday 10 February 2008, at 10h30. There are 26 half-hour episodes in the series.
Synopsis
The series fuses popular culture and religious culture as a way of telling stories about young heroes through the art of music and the visual medium of television.
Each episode features the making of a funky music video by a popular artist, incorporating imagery that depicts the rich lives of these young South Africans making a difference in their communities.
The culmination of each episode is the playing of the actual music video.
The first 21 minutes preceding the screening of the music video comprise the behind-the-scenes process showing the making of the music video.
Driven by presenter Tshepo Mosese, a.k.a. kwaito star Howza, the show takes us through the different stages of the music video production, while we find out more about our local hero.
The “behind-the-scenes” style is a tool to profile the young local hero while depicting his or her lifestyle.
