Season 1
Nonceba's child lies dying. Her husband Duma is suspicious of clinics and refuses to allow her to seek help. The young rural girl dares not disobey him.
Returning from work that evening Nonceba realises that although she is terrified of Duma and knows little about health matters, something must be done.
She evades her drunken husband and makes a nightmare dash through the dangerous shackland alleys to the sanctuary of the Soul City clinic.
Despite the frantic efforts of the clinic staff, Nonceba watches her baby die - and learns that a simple glass of water would have saved him.
Thus begins a journey of discovery. It is a journey of courage and growing strength in the impoverished, overcrowded communities of past-Apartheid South Africa.
In 13 half-hour episodes, the viewers are swept along a rollercoaster ride of pathos and comedy as: a young nurse discovers that her husband has given her HIV/AIDS; an unusual love triangle ends in tragedy; a man loses his best friend in an underground minig accident; a mother discovers that her daughter is being abused; and a doctor uncovers a crime and becomes a hit-and-run victim.
The first season of Soul City deals with issues related to mother and child health and includes:
Immunisation
Breastfeeding
Diarrhoea and dehydration
Maternal health
HIV and AIDS
Acute respiratory illness
Paraffin poisoning and burns
