Up Close & Personal is a 1996 romantic drama inspired by the story of Jessica Savitch who, in the 1970's, became the "First Woman Anchor" on American television.
The movie is based on the book Golden Girl: The Story of Jessica Savitch by biographer Alanna Nash, which was first published in 1988.
Sally Atwater is a beautiful young woman who has dreams of becoming a TV news personality.
After sending her demo tape to numerous media houses, Sally receives an offer from a TV station based in Miami. She starts off as a gofer for high-profile newsman, Warren Justice.
Warren has aborted many a story due to his insistence on integrity and has no problem criticising Sally about the way she dresses and even how bad she looks.
But career-driven Sally remains unmoved in her pursuit for the camera, and it's no surprise when she's promoted to station weathercaster, with Tally as her stage name.
With Warren's valued input, Tally moves on to news reporting and their relationship eventually takes a romantic turn.
Her career continues to flourish when she accepts a better position in Philadelphia, while her relationship with Warren takes some really strange turns.
