Season 1
La Familiar (previously known as La Familia) is a South African magazine show produced by Cut to Black Productions which captures families still on their journey as they either, explore, interrogate, champion and/or celebrate pillars such as family values, identity, education, health, jobs and careers along with global issues.
La Familia, meaning "family" in Spanish, explores the notion of family and how it is celebrated in South Africa. It was hosted by Shandukani Nesengani (Seasons 1 and 2) and Gabriel Temudzani (from Season 3).
Armed with a healthy appetite and his clan's praise poem, the host travels around Limpopo and Gauteng exploring the notion of family in a changing country.
Using special occasions like birthdays, weddings and funerals, La Familia asks why family is important, and what it means. It explores modern family relations, in particular looking at how surrogate families work and play with each other.
Episodes explore family dynamics as they exist in different forms, including sibling rivalry, responsibility and authority.
The show also looks at the relationship food has with these different families, and how important it is for all kinds of families to "break bread" together, and how this is done.
