Synopsis
The story is set at Camp Rock, the acclaimed summer workshop that launched the music careers of many including the hugely popular Connect 3.
Aspiring singer-songwriter Mitchie Torres, a teen from a working class family, longs to be part of it and is thrilled when her mother, a caterer, takes a job as the camp cook so Mitchie can attend camp for a discounted tuition while helping in the kitchen.
On her first day at camp, Mitchie is intimidated by the privileged kids and feels as if she doesn't fit in anywhere. She is befriended by Caitlyn, a down-to-earth girl who wants to be a music producer, and quickly dazzled by the camp's veteran members, the catty clique led by diva Tess Tyler and her friends Peggy and Ella.
Mitchie even tries to impress the trio with the tale of her mother being a high-ranking executive at Hot Tunes TV and agrees to join their group as back-up singer. All the while, she keeps quiet the fact that she's also working in the kitchen.
Meanwhile, Connect 3's summer concert tour is cancelled and lead singer Shane Gray is forced to return to Camp Rock by his band mates, Jason and Nate. They're hoping Shane can get his ego in check by leading a few camp classes and rediscovering his passion for music.
Although Shane's displeasure is obvious at first, he is eventually inspired by the campers' enthusiasm for music. When he hears a voice singing a song that deeply affects him, he sets out to find the girl behind the beautiful voice.
While the other campers fawn over Shane, he is particularly intrigued by Mitchie who seems to appreciate him for his art, not his celebrity image.
But Tess is threatened by their budding friendship and makes it her mission to expose that Mitchie is merely "the kitchen help." Ultimately, she manages to get both Mitchie and Caitlyn banned from performing at the camp's big Final Jam competition.
On the last night of camp, with Shane, Jason and Nate as judges for Final Jam, and parents and families in the audience, it's up to Mitchie to overcome her fears and step into the spotlight, while the most unsuspecting camper wins the competition.
