Season 2

Juliet Miller's life is turned upside down forever after an incident that leaves her family fighting for life, love and survival.

From the outside, Joe and Juliet Miller seem to have perfect lives: designer house, Joe's dazzling career as a top barrister, Juliet's enviable job as stay-at-home-mum to 13-year-old Ella - but all is not what it seems.

A flustered Juliet prepares for her husband's return from work. He arrives with flowers and greets wife and daughter, but both adults are jumpy and frenetic.

We see unsettling clues as to what might be going on and wait anxiously for some kind of eruption. That night, a shocking incident occurs that will change each of their lives forever.

Juliet is plunged into the criminal justice system and has to fight for her sanity and the survival of her family.

Season 2 stars Maxine Peake, Matthew Macfadyen, Alice Sykes, Sophie Okonedo, Zoe Telford, Denis Lawson, Steven MacKintosh, Kate Hardie, Nadine Marshall and Eddie Marsan.

Cast and Characters

Maxine Peake plays Juliet Miller

Fragile and isolated Juliet Miller lives in a perfect home with a perfect family. Seemingly she's depressed and taking anti-depressants. But is her husband caring for her or controlling her? And what can she do to change her situation?

Matthew Macfadyen plays Joe Miller

Loving father and respected barrister, Joe Miller appears to be the perfect husband but is he? When Joe is left in a critical condition after he's stabbed in his own bed what will be revealed about his private life?

Alice Sykes plays Ella Miller

Thirteen-year-old daughter of Joe and Juliet, Ella idolises her dad and loves but pities her fragile mother. She becomes ridden with guilt at her father's death believing herself to be responsible, can she find hope and happiness again?

Sophie Okonedo plays Jackie Woolf

Jacqueline Woolf is a committed solicitor who is on duty the night that Juliet is arrested. She's interested in protecting women and takes on Juliet's case with zeal and a certain amount of political fervour.

She is determined to achieve the best outcome possible for Juliet but has to work hard to get Juliet to open up and give her some context to fight the fight with.

Zoe Telford plays Anna Klein

Anna Klein is a successful young criminal barrister who Jack persuades to represent Juliet in each of her court cases, Criminal and Family.

When Juliet refuses to open up and talk to her legal team, Anna becomes worried that she will have nothing to play with in court to defend Juliet effectively.

Denis Lawson plays Bill Faber

DCI Faber leads the police investigation into Juliet's case. Faber is a thorough detective who dedicates himself to exploring all avenues and allowing the courts to reach the appropriate conclusion.

His lapsing Catholicism, and his background in investigations into child abuse, have taught Faber that there is no such thing as black and white in our world and Juliet's case is the perfect example of that.

Steven MacKintosh plays Chris Sexton

DI Sexton is Faber's second in command. His modus operandi is entirely different to Faber's. Sexton follows his nose and his gut instinct.

When Juliet is charged with attempted murder he refuses to believe that this is anything other than a straight forward, coldly planned attack of the worst kind.

Desperate for his own children, Sexton cannot believe that any mother could put her children through what Ella is now experiencing.

Kate Hardie plays Flo Sexton

DS Flo Sexton is married to DI Sexton. As the case progresses, she begins to have serious doubts about her marriage and the way her husband is approaching this investigation.

Nadine Marshall plays Norma

Norma Fredericks is the Social Worker assigned to Juliet and Ella's case. Her primary concern is Ella's welfare and not the paperwork that she's required to spend more and more of her time on.

She really cares about the children she looks after and often finds herself at odds with her manager.

Eddie Marsan plays Saul

Saul is Joe's idiosyncratic clerk at chambers who takes it upon himself to 'clerk' Joe's life as well as his legal practice. His loyalty to Joe is totally unerring and he carries these feelings through to his God-daughter Ella.
