Season 2

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries is a British television drama series produced by the BBC about Detective Inspector Thomas "Tommy" Lynley, 8th Earl of Asherton of Scotland Yard and Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers.

In addition to the tensions involved in solving murder cases, the series thrives on the characters' clashes regarding personality, gender and class.

The series originally aired in the UK on the BBC from 12 March, 2001 to 1 June, 2008. There are 23 two-hour episodes in six seasons.

The Inspector Lynley Mysteries airs in South Africa on DStv's BBC Entertainment (formerly BBC Prime) channel. Episodes are split in two to make them an hour each in length, effectively doubling the number of episodes per season.

A rebroadcast of Season 2 premiered on BBC Entertainment on Tuesday 2 September 2008, at 13h00. New episodes air daily, from Monday to Friday. There are eight hour-long episodes in the second season.

Season 2 Synopsis

Based on the best-selling novels by Elizabeth George, The Inspector Lynley Mysteries are contemporary murder mysteries featuring Scotland Yard’s most unlikely pairing: the dashing aristocratic detective, Superintendent Thomas Lynley and his working class sidekick, Detective Sergeant Barbara Havers.

Having cemented their friendship after a rocky start, the detective duo are faced with some puzzling murders to solve.

These include the abduction and killing of a Government minister’s daughter, a murder on Lynley’s ancestral estate with the prime suspect his brother and the suspicious death of a young Asian man involving racial tension, religious extremism, family loyalties and illicit sex.

In the first episode:

The body of cricket star, Kenneth Waring, is found in a burnt out house and seems to be the victim of an arson attack.

It emerges that Kenneth has three women in his life - his lifelong patron and mentor, Miriam Whitelaw, his married lover, Gabriella Patten and his childhood sweetheart and devoted wife Jeannie.

A complex web of family ties proves difficult to untangle and Havers starts to question Lynley's tactics.
