Season 53
The Grammy Awards (originally called the Gramophone Awards), or "Grammys", are presented annually by the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences of the United States for outstanding achievements in the record industry.
The awards ceremony features performances by prominent artists, and some of the more prominent Grammy Awards are presented in a widely-viewed televised ceremony.
The Grammys are considered the highest music honour, the U.S. record industry's equivalent to the Academy Awards (Oscars) for motion pictures.
The Grammy Awards show is usually aired in February. In South Africa the awards air live on DStv's Channel O, and a delayed broadcast is shown on M-Net the following day.
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards took place on Sunday 13 February 2011 and were broadcast live from the Staples Centre in Los Angeles for the eighth consecutive time.
The 2011 awards ceremony aired live in South Africa on DStv's Channel O on Monday 14 February 2011, at 03h00. It was preceded by a live broadcast of the the countdown to the 2011 Grammy Awards Red Carpet on DStv's E! Entertainment channel at 00h00, followed by the live Grammys Red Carpet on E!, from 01h00-03h00.
A delayed broadcast of the Grammys aired on M-Net and M-Net HD on Monday 14 February 2011, at 21h30. The special was three hours long.
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards
The 53rd Annual Grammy Awards were held on February 13, 2011 at the Staples Centre in Los Angeles. Barbra Streisand was honoured as the MusiCares Person of the Year two nights prior to the telecast on February 11.
Nominations were announced on December 1, 2010. A total of 109 awards will be presented.
For the third year, nominations were announced on prime time television as part of "The GRAMMY Nominations Concert Live! — Countdown to Music's Biggest Night" a one-hour special broadcast live on CBS from Club Nokia at L.A. Live.
Eminem topped the nominations with ten, including Record of The Year, Song of the Year and Album of The Year followed by Bruno Mars who received seven nominations.
Jay-Z, Lady Antebellum, and Lady Gaga each earned six nominations; Jeff Beck, B.o.B, David Frost, Philip Lawrence, John Legend and The Roots received five each.
Alex Da Kid, The Black Keys, Drake, Cee Lo Green, Ari Levine, Katy Perry, Rihanna, Dirk Sobotka, and Zac Brown each earned four nods; Arcade Fire, Chris Brown, Muse, Miranda Lambert, John Mayer, Beyoncé and Alicia Keys each earned three nods.
Robert Plant, Pink, Justin Bieber, Mumford & Sons, Monica, La Roux, Goldfrapp, Janelle Monáe, Sade, Michael Bublé, Fantasia, Hayley Williams and The White Stripes all received two nominations.
