SCD: Banks Breathes Fresh Havoc Into Von Memerty's Manual

Saturday nights Strictly Come Dancing was too brilliant - I haven’t laughed and cheered so much for an hour and half in forever and by the end of it my spirits were uplifted in the grooviest ways.

Tamara and Brandon’s Cha Cha Cha and their scoring a whammy four tens for it was da bomb and nothing could have been more refreshing than Mark Banks taking over as host from Ian von Memerty - who for some reason suddenly decided he had to go to Greece. How can you just take off like that when you’re in the middle of hosting a show?

Whatever the reason I didn’t care because Mark Banks was so hysterical and silly that he even managed to numb the killer pain of Riaan getting to stay for yet another round putting him into the top three. It’s just too incredible isn’t it? Even he seems to think it’s ridiculous which goes to show how insane it is!

The best about Mark was the whole irreverent thing he had going on as if he’d suddenly found himself in the middle of hosting a show he doesn’t watch that he’d make jokes about from his couch if he happened to catch it. The way he mixed his commentaries and asides about the tacky elements of the show while giving just the right respect and reverance to the important aspects of it was excellent as was the extent to which he pissed Sandy off, hehe.

By the end of she was soo annoyed with him for not taking everything seriously that she refused to listen to a word he had to say, speaking over him and literally trying to push him out of the way as it ended.

I kept imagining the people behind the scenes (like the person who refuses to turn down the microphones even when the person shrieking isn’t in the picture) freaking by the disruption Mark was causing and it all made me chuckle more.

What was also so funny was that it couldn’t have happened if Von Memerty didn’t exist because there would be no need to breathe fresh air into his cheese if he didn’t. Some of my most classic moments from the evening were Mark jumping out of the way in fright when the band conductor went beserk (as he always does) when the band introduced themselves and his telling the judges that the cue things had spelling errors.

They should defs have him more often because for the first time I was really waiting for the bits in between instead of wishing they’d finish as quickly as possible. Here are some quotes from the episode that were my faves:

As Mark was introducing the episode with Sandy:

“Well spring has sprung and luckily we’re here on a springy sprung dance floor …  (Eeew who wrote this?) … and now …heh .. and now …(someone was was paid to write this? Heh – I can see why they use von Memerty) … and now it is time to meet the stars of our show.”

Before Tamara and Brandon’s first dance and weekly update:

“It’s onto our next couple and they’re last week’s top scorers Tamara Dey and Brandon Eilers and what a score they received from the judges. It even prompted viewers voting from as far a field as Germiston to smash their front windows when Tarryn gave them a reverberating 10 apparently. People were in shock, paramedics and Metro care - let’s see what went on this week. “

After Tamara and Brandon’s dance:

"Well done Tamara and Brandon with an explosion of pearls at the end there – even the oysters were clapping."

After announcing the leaderboard for the first ballroom round which was as follows:

scd6

"Well, that puts some things in perspective - and what is a perspective and why?"

After the Scottish dance military display:

"Oh Sandy, you’re so nice about everything aren’t you? Even Scottish dancers on the 13th floor of the Carlton."

After Jeannie D and Anthony’s second dance:

"On you go to Sandy and see what happens there. They’re two munchkins from Willy Wonka and the Cha Cha Cha Chocolate Factory. You should get the munchkins coming through to you now Sandy, going through to the Green Room. It’s not really a Green Room, it’s a very bad burgundy which I think somebody may have had a hand in.”

After explaining how the scoring works:

"If you understood that, call the number on your screen now."

Speaking of which – if you want to vote during the week to make sure Riaan doesn’t win this thing don’t forget that you can get the voting numbers on TVSA’s SCD showpage. Here’s a link to it: Strictly Come Dancing II.
